In the first days of the year, the Multicolor Carnival of the Border (Carnaval Multicolor de La Frontera) is celebrated in Ipiales, a municipality in the south of Nariño on the border between Colombia and Ecuador, the name by which the local version of the Black and White Carnival typical of Nariño is known.

The Ipiales Carnival includes all the distinctive elements of these festivities, beginning in the last days of December with the celebration of April Fool's Day and with the burning of the old years on the last day of the year.

On January 5 and 6, Black and White Days are held in the traditional way. The "Ipialeños" parade through the streets painting their bodies and faces with black paint and colorful parades of comparsas take place.

On Black Day, the Ipial family enters, a local adaptation of the Castañeda family parade, characteristic of the Pasto carnival. White Day is marked by the enormous parade of floats that is celebrated in style in Ipiales.

The Ipialeño artists show all their talent with spectacular floats that celebrate the peasant tradition of the region, the myths and legends, the biodiversity and the customs of southern Nariño.

The Multicolor Carnival of the Border (Carnaval Multicolor de La Frontera) is a celebration that unites border towns and celebrates the culture of Nariño, strengthening ties and promoting joy, coexistence and tourism in the region.
