The New Year in Purificación is celebrated with the traditional Folkloric Festival of Southern Tolima (Festival Folclórico del Sur del Tolima), an event with over half a century of tradition. Traditionally, the festivities in Purificación are divided into two seasons.
The first season, which usually runs from the last days of December until January 2, has as its main event the Parade and Contest, in which the people of Purificación showcase their creativity by making the traditional effigies burned to symbolize the end of the year.
The municipal beauty pageant is also held during this season, which includes musical performances and horseback rides.
The second season usually begins a few days after the end of the first, around the Epiphany celebration on January 6.
During this time, the main events of the Folkloric Festival of Southern Tolima (Festival Folclórico del Sur del Tolima) take place, such as the parade of dance troupes, featuring groups from different municipalities dressed in traditional attire that represents the colors and customs of the region.
The festival also includes the Departmental Beauty Pageant of Southern Tolima, where candidates from various municipalities compete not only for their beauty but also for their knowledge and commitment to folkloric traditions.
The Folkloric Festival of Southern Tolima is an expression of regional pride that preserves the cultural roots of Purificación and strengthens the sense of identity among its residents.
