Every August, Medellín pays homage to its nickname “The City of Eternal Spring” with the spectacular Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival), one of the most emblematic festivities in the country, known worldwide for its vibrant display and attracting thousands of national and international visitors.
The main event of the festival is the Desfile de Silleteros (Silleteros Parade), which has been the centerpiece of the fair since its first edition in 1957. In this event, the renowned farmers from the Santa Elena district carry massive floral arrangements on their backs using silletas, showcasing their skill and creativity. These silletas, decorated with a variety of flowers and intricate designs, pay tribute to the peasant heritage and the history of the silleteros, who once used these structures to transport flowers and goods.
In addition to the Silleteros Parade, the festival includes a wide range of cultural and recreational activities. There are traditional and contemporary music concerts, flower exhibitions at the Botanical Garden, and local talent competitions. The fondas and tablados, which recreate festive, typical village environments of Antioquia, offer food, drinks, and live music.
The classic and antique car exhibitions, horse parades, and recreational activities such as the cycling tours and traditional games are also part of the festival's diverse program.
The Feria de las Flores not only celebrates the region’s biodiversity and natural beauty but also strengthens Medellín’s cultural identity, promotes tourism and the local economy, and solidifies the city as an epicenter of joy and tradition. This event is a testament to the pride of the people of Antioquia (known as paisas) and to Medellín’s hospitality and welcoming spirit.
