Since 2003, June 29 has been celebrated as the Day of "Lechona Tolimense", a festivity through which the people of this department pay tribute to their traditional dish, a preparation made with pork and peas, baked inside the pig’s skin and typically served with white corn "arepa".
On this day in Ibagué, at Manuel Murillo Toro Park in the city center, more than 50 "lechona" producers offer the traditional dish, complete with white "arepa" and the essential crispy pork skin, in an event that runs from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The occasion attracts a large number of locals from Ibagué, as well as visitors from other towns in Tolima, Bogotá, and other regions of the country, who don’t miss the chance to enjoy the department’s iconic dish, prepared by the best producers and offered at a very reasonable price.
The Day of "Lechona Tolimense" is the perfect occasion to visit Ibagué, the “musical capital of Colombia,” and savor one of the country’s most emblematic dishes, always remembering the golden rule: "lechona tolimense" does not contain rice.
