In July the municipality of San Miguel in Putumayo celebrates its River Festival (Festival Internacional del Río), with which its inhabitants pay tribute to the San Miguel River, which in that section serves as a natural border with Ecuador.

The aquatic competitions are some of the most anticipated events of the festival. In the town center of Puerto Colón, swimming, canoeing and racing competitions are held with different types of boats such as peque-peque - a wooden boat characteristic of the Colombian, Ecuadorian and Peruvian Amazon - or boats with outboard motors.

In La Dorada, the municipal seat, cultural exhibitions are held, among which those carried out by the indigenous peoples of the region stand out, which include traditional games such as cast net, lasso, bow and bodoquera.

Sports activities such as soccer and beach volleyball tournaments, as well as concerts by local and national artists, complete the festive atmosphere.

The River Festival (Festival Internacional del Río) is not only a space for celebration, but also an opportunity to educate the population about the importance of caring for and protecting the water resources and biodiversity of the region, thus strengthening the cultural identity and sense of belonging of the people. inhabitants of San Miguel.
