At the beginning of January, Puerto Guzmán, a municipality in the north of Putumayo on the banks of the Caquetá River, celebrates the traditional Carnival of Blacks and Whites (Carnaval de Negros y Blancos de Puerto Guzmán), a festival originally from Nariño that has deep roots in several Putumayan towns.

The days of Blacks and Whites, with their traditional face painting and celebrations with foam, flour and talcum powder, are the central events of the Puerto Guzmán carnival.

In the emblematic float parade, Guzmán artisans pay tribute to the biodiversity of the region and the local indigenous people with colorful floats with mythological motifs and animals from the Amazon rainforest.

In addition to this, the carnival has a children's carnival - a day of celebrations planned for the children of the municipality -, as well as a pageant with candidates from all corners of Puerto Guzmán, who compete showing their beauty and their knowledge of the culture. of the region and the history of the carnival.

Folk dance competitions, castañeda family parades, music, drums and costumes create a celebratory atmosphere that highlights local traditions and encourages social cohesion.

This carnival is a cultural manifestation that strengthens the identity of Puerto Guzmán and celebrates the richness of its diversity.
