In January, the municipality of Villagarzón in the Amazon foothills of Putumayo celebrates its traditional carnivals (Carnavales de Villagarzón), a festival in which you can notice the influence of the Nariñense culture, brought to the region by the settlers who populated the area in the first half of the 20th century.
On January 5 and 6, they are celebrated in the traditional way of the black and white carnivals of the southwestern part of the country.
The people of Villagarzon participate in massive parades, painting their faces and covering each other with talcum powder and flour, events that unite the community in the same festive atmosphere.
In addition to this, the floats stand out, in which you can see all the talent and creativity of local artisans.
The colorful floats make reference to myths and legends of the region, as well as the biodiversity and culture of the Amazon foothills.
The pageant, in which candidates from the different towns and villages of the municipality participate, and the concerts with local and national artists complete the festive spirit of these dates.
The Villagarzón Carnivals (Carnavales de Villagarzón) are a space of integration, where the community celebrates its cultural identity, promotes tourism and enjoys an environment full of music, color and tradition.
