In October, Villavicencio hosts one of the most important cowboy competitions on the continent: the World "Coleo" Championship (Encuentro Mundial del Coleo), first held in 1997 at the Las Malocas Park on the outskirts of the city, where it continues to be held today.

"Coleo" is a traditional sport of the Colombian and Venezuelan eastern plains, also practiced under different names and rules in Mexico, Brazil, and Panama.

For four minutes, a rider must attempt to take down a bull as many times as possible by pulling it by the tail, an activity that has become a fundamental part of patronal festivals in the departments of Meta, Casanare, and Arauca.

The World Coleo Championship (Encuentro Mundial del Coleo) now brings together around 300 athletes annually, competing to demonstrate their skill and the training of their horses. The atmosphere in the coleo arena is electrifying, with the audience cheering and supporting their favorites, creating an atmosphere of excitement and camaraderie.

The event is complemented by live performances of local music and regional food festivals, offering a perfect opportunity to enjoy the best of Colombian plains culture in a festive and friendly competitive environment.
