Between the end of August and the beginning of September, the Return Festival (Festival del Retorno) is celebrated in Fonseca, a municipality in the department of La Guajira, a celebration that already has half a century of tradition and has become one of the most anticipated and loved festivals by Fonsequeros.
The most representative event of this festival, which has accompanied the festival since its first edition in 1974, is the Baptism, a symbolic act in which a “Bishop” - an illustrious citizen of the town who is designated to play this role - baptizes with a fig branch to the children returned to Fonseca.
The ceremony also includes the naming of new adopted children of the town. During the festival, colorful parades organized by the different neighborhoods of the municipality also take place, in which the inhabitants celebrate their history and culture.
Taking advantage of the windy season in Colombia, the Kite Festival is also held within the framework of these holidays, an event that brings together children and adults in a festive and fun atmosphere to enjoy the art of flying kites.
The Festival of Return (Festival del Retorno) is a festivity that celebrates love for the land, family unity and cultural traditions, establishing itself as an emblematic event in Fonseca.
