At the end of June in the municipality of San Pelayo, about 30 kilometers from Montería, the National Porro Music Festival (Festival Nacional del Porro) is celebrated, which pays tribute to this musical rhythm typical of the Colombian Caribbean region that fuses elements of indigenous piper groups, the rhythms African and European wind instruments.
Musical performances are the center of the festival. Groups from different departments of the country appear before the jury performing "porro palitia'o" and "tapa'o", in the three categories: youth, seniors and Queen of Queens.
There is also a competition for unpublished works that helps keep the tradition alive and revitalize the repertoire. The academic component of the festival includes workshops, conferences, and conversations aimed at musicians, researchers and the general public.
These spaces allow for a deep dialogue about the roots of the "porro pelayero", its impact on the cultural identity of the region, and the challenges for its preservation in the modern context.
Attendees can learn about the musical technique, instrumental arrangements and historical influences that have shaped this genre. Parades, gastronomic exhibitions and craft exhibitions are also held within the framework of the festival.
San Pelayo is transformed into a festive scene, where the community and visitors immerse themselves in the local culture, enjoying the music, dance and joy of the Caribbean. The National Porro Music Festival (Festival Nacional del Porro) is a source of pride for San Pelayo and a showcase for the dissemination and conservation of this important cultural legacy.
