In January the municipality of Argelia, located in the south of the department about 170 kilometers from Popayán, celebrates the traditional Carnival of Blacks and Whites, a typical festival of several towns in southwestern Colombia.

One of the central events of the carnival is the parade of floats and troupes, a colorful procession in which, with elaborate costumes and to the rhythm of the typical music of Cauca, the Algerians highlight the culture of the indigenous peoples of the region, the peasant traditions, biodiversity and its own myths and legends.

The Reinado de la Simpatía (Charm Pageant) is also held, with contestants from various parts of the town. The last day of the carnival is marked by humor and satire with the traditional Reinado de la Yuca (Yuca Pageant), a parody contest where men dress as women and parade, along with skits and comedic performances.

Live music, with local artists and special guests, accompanies the carnival weekend, as well as gastronomic fairs with the most emblematic products and preparations of the region.

The Carnival of Blacks and Whites of Algeria is not only a fun festival, but also a space to reaffirm cultural identity, promote diversity and strengthen community ties in this region of Cauca.
