In August, wind season in Colombia, the skies of the emblematic colonial town of Villa de Leyva dress up to receive the Wind and Kite Festival (Festival de Cometas y Viento), an event with almost half a century of tradition that attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The festival focuses on the tradition of kite flying, transforming the vast sky of Villa de Leyva into a colorful canvas of shapes and colors. Participants of all ages gather to display their kites, which range from simple designs to elaborate artistic creations.

Competitions are held throughout the festival in all sorts of categories including three-dimensional kite, art kite, night flying kite for self-lit kites and the famous largest and smallest kite categories with kites ranging from the smallest from 6 meters to miniature ones of less than 15 centimeters.

In addition to these activities, during the festival there are acrobatic flight shows performed by professionals, as well as concerts and cultural and folklore exhibitions. The festive atmosphere is enhanced by the beauty of the landscape and the historical heritage of Villa de Leyva, creating a memorable experience for locals and visitors.

The Villa de Leyva Kite Festival (Festival de Cometas y Viento) not only celebrates a unique cultural tradition, but also promotes tourism and community enjoyment, strengthening local identity and appreciation of Colombian heritage.
