At the end of August, the small town of Cantagallo in the south of Bolívar celebrates its patron saint festivities in honor of Santa Rosa de Lima (Fiestas Patronales en honor a Santa Rosa de Lima), whose festival is commemorated on the 30th of the month in this municipality.
For five days, cantagalleros and visitors can enjoy a varied program that includes live music, musical and dance performances by local folk groups, horseback riding, and traditional corralejas of the region.
The popular gigantona parade and the “mad cows” are also held - an event in which a cow figure with firecrackers and sparklers is paraded among the crowd, which runs to avoid getting burned -, traditions similar to those can be found in some towns in the northeast of Antioquia.
The 30th is marked by dawn, the Eucharist in honor of the town's patron saint, and the fireworks show that concludes the festivities.
The Festivities of Santa Rosa de Lima in Cantagallo (Fiestas Patronales en honor a Santa Rosa de Lima) are an expression of identity and community cohesion, where faith and culture are intertwined to celebrate the patron saint and strengthen the ties between the inhabitants of the municipality.
