In early December, the Araucano de la Frontera Festival (meaning “Araucano of the Border” in English) takes place in Arauca. This vibrant celebration attracts hundreds of visitors from various parts of the department, as well as Venezuelan tourists who cross the José Antonio Páez Bridge to honor the shared culture of the eastern plains that unites Colombians and Venezuelans.

One of the festival’s highlights is the International Joropo and Contrapunteo Tournament, where professional and amateur artists from both countries compete in categories like strong male and female voice, "llanera" music ensemble, dance couple, unpublished poem, and copleros.

The musical showcase is enhanced by performances from numerous guest artists, who captivate audiences with the region's finest music.

The International Pageant of Joropo and Llanero Beauty also takes place, featuring contestants from various departments of Colombia.

Other festival activities include horseback riding, traditional games, and gastronomic fairs featuring regional dishes like hallacas, fried pork, and the popular pisillo de chigüire.

The Araucano de la Frontera Festival (Festival Araucano de La Frontera) is more than a celebration; it strengthens the cultural pride and identity of the people of Arauca. The term “Frontera” highlights the border shared by Colombia and Venezuela, emphasizing the festival's role in reinforcing bonds of kinship, preserving shared traditions, and fostering unity between the llaneros of both nations.
