A few kilometers from the Gulf of Urabá is Apartadó, in the heart of the banana growing area, this being the main crop in the region. The name of the municipality is linked to this product, translating to “Río del Plátano” in the local indigenous dialect.Paying tribute to this tradition, every year Apartadó celebrates its Banana Festival, usually in November.
During the festivities, Apartadó transforms into a scene of joy and color with parades, troupes and floats decorated with motifs alluding to bananas. Participants, often dressed in traditional and creative costumes, parade through the streets.
The festival includes a variety of cultural and recreational activities. There are sports competitions, live music concerts covering genres such as tropical music, vallenato and reggae, and folk dance performances.
One of the most anticipated events of the festival is the garrucha competition, which is a device powered by pulleys with which banana bunches are transported from the plantation to the processing plant.
In this contest, workers compete in tests of strength, skill and speed, this being an emblematic occasion of the Apartadó festivities.
The Banana Festivals (Fiesta del Banano ) in Apartadó not only celebrate the importance of bananas for the region, but also strengthen the sense of community and promote tourism. This emblematic event is an example of the effort and dedication of the farmers and the cultural wealth of Urabá.
