In December, taking advantage of the Immaculate Conception holiday, the traditional Yopal Festival (Ferias y Fiestas de Yopal) is held in the capital of Casanare, one of the most anticipated events in the city's festive calendar.
Normally the festivities begin on December 7 with the traditional Colombian celebration of the day of the candles - the eve of the Immaculate Conception - and the lighting of the Christmas lights that introduces Yopal into the festive season at the end of the year.
During the weekend, horseback riding, joropo cultural exhibitions, gastronomic fairs with typical dishes of the region and sporting events take place. There are also live performances by guest artists of national and international stature.
In recent editions of the Yopal Festivals, artists such as Jhonny Rivera, Pipe Calderón, Los 50 de Joselito or Alkilados have performed. Within the framework of the festivities, the Livestock Exhibition is held with traditional bovine and equine judging, an event that also attracts a large number of attendees.
The Yopal Fairs and Festivals not only celebrate the local identity, but also encourage tourism, strengthen community ties and promote pride in the traditions of the eastern plains.
