In mid-September the mining town of Zaragoza in northeastern Antioquia celebrates its birthday, having been founded on the 14th of this month in 1581.

The people of Zaragoza celebrate the festivities of their town by paying homage to their patron saint, in what is known as the Patron Saint Festivities of Santo Cristo de Zaragoza (Fiestas Tradicionales Del Santo Cristo), a festival that combines religious elements with activities typical of the popular festivities of the region.

The main event of the patron saint festivities takes place on the 14th, the date of the town's anniversary, with the imposing procession with the image of the Holy Christ through the main streets of the town, until reaching the central square where a mass is celebrated.

During this celebration, parishioners pay the promises made to the Holy Christ and thank him for the favors received, traditionally in the form of votive offerings.

On the other hand, on these dates there are also popular activities such as the Gigantona parade, in which Zaragoza residents parade a huge doll up to three meters high through the streets while throwing cornstarch and carnival foam, or the traditional “cows”. crazy” in which a cow frame with horns and a fireworks-lit tail is brought out, which chases people while they run and dance to avoid being burned.

The Fiestas del Santo Cristo de Zaragoza are a centenary celebration that combines religious devotion with joy and tradition, strengthening the identity and sense of community in this ancient Antioquia municipality.
