In August the municipality of Arauquita, on the border between Colombia and Venezuela, celebrates its anniversary, commemorating the foundation made by Jesuit missionaries led by the priest Bernabé González of the hamlet originally called San Lorenzo in 1675, because it was founded on the day of the feast of this saint from the 3rd century.
During these dates, the town celebrates its patron saint festivities with which Arauquiteños honor their patron saint, their history and traditions.
The Arauquita festivals (Fiestas Patronales de Arauquita) have a varied program that includes soccer, cycling and athletics sporting events as well as the traditional encostalados race.
There are also parades of floats and troupes, a parade of costumed pets, horseback riding and live music with local talent and special guests for all tastes and ages. On August 10, the feast of San Lorenzo, the day begins at dawn with the Vespers prayer in honor of the patron saint of Arauquita, followed by a procession that ends at the Parish Church of San Lorenzo where the Eucharist is celebrated.
The Patron Saint Festivities of San Lorenzo in Arauquita are an expression of the cultural identity and religious faith of the community.
This event not only strengthens social and family ties, but also promotes tourism and the local economy, establishing itself as one of the most anticipated and significant festivities of the year.
