About 80 kilometers from Medellín is the small town of Guatapé, known for its reservoir and the Peñol, an imposing monolith more than 200 meters high that is the main tourist attraction of the municipality.
Every November, however, the reservoir and the Peñol take a backseat when the town becomes the headquarters of the Oriente International Film Festival (Festival Internacional de Cine de Oriente - Fico.), held for the first time in 2007.
FICO's main purpose is the promotion and dissemination of Colombian cinema in both short and feature film formats and both fiction and documentary.
Within the framework of the festival, a short film competition is held that rewards the best production around a specific topic.
For example, in its 2023 edition the theme was “Truth or post-truth, the crossroads of societies.”
Likewise, being an international festival, it seeks to build bridges of dialogue between the Colombian film industry and that of other countries, paying tribute to guest countries with film screenings and conversations and conferences with directors and actors.
In recent years, countries such as Peru and India have been special guests of FICO, giving attendees the opportunity to discover international cinema that rarely reaches large theaters.
In addition to screenings, workshops, master classes and conferences are held with people linked to the national film industry.
FICO is an unmissable event for film and culture lovers, consolidating Guatapé as an important cultural and cinematographic destination in Colombia.
