In San Juan del Cesar, a quintessential land of "vallenato" that produced great exponents of the genre like Diomedes Díaz, Nelson Velásquez, and Juancho Rois, the National Vallenato Music Composers Festival (Festival Nacional de Compositores de Música Vallenata) is celebrated in early December, an event with over 45 years of tradition.
During the festival, composers from different parts of the Caribbean coast present their original songs in both professional and amateur categories.
The event aims to highlight the creative talent behind the songs that have immortalized this genre and to give recognition to new generations of composers. In addition to the original song competition, there is a "piqueria" contest, a form of lyrical duel between two improvising troubadours, in both children's and adult categories.
The festival includes concerts featuring renowned "vallenato" artists and groups, as well as panel discussions on the genre’s evolution, its history, and its major exponents. The event also pays tribute to legendary composers who have left a legacy in "vallenato" music.
The National Composers Festival (Festival Nacional de Compositores de Música Vallenata) not only celebrates musical creativity but also strengthens the cultural identity of the region and attracts thousands of visitors, establishing itself as a cornerstone of "vallenato" music in Colombia..
