At the beginning of December in the municipality of María La Baja, about 65 kilometers from Cartagena, the National Festival of Bullerengue (Festival Nacional del Bullerengue) is celebrated, a festival with which the people of Maria La Baja pay tribute to this rhythm typical of the Colombian Caribbean and the Darién region, inherited from the indigenous African rhythms brought to Colombia by slaves during the colonial period.

For four days the town is filled with music and dance with live performances by local and regional groups that perform this energetic genre. The streets and squares are transformed into vibrant stages, where dancers and musicians transmit the passion of bullerengue to the public.

In addition to the musical performances, the National Bullerengue Pageant takes place during the festival, featuring contestants from across the country who showcase their beauty and knowledge of the history of this musical genre and the Afro heritage in the Colombian Caribbean.

The Bullerengue Festival in María la Baja not only celebrates the identity and tradition of the region, but also strengthens the sense of community and promotes the cultural heritage of the Colombian Caribbean, attracting visitors from various parts and enriching the cultural life of the municipality.
