During carnival time, about 40 kilometers from Barranquilla, one of the most traditional festivals in the department of Atlántico takes place: it is the Festival y Reinado del Millo that since 1967 has been organized in the municipality of Juan de Acosta to pay tribute to the typical local product, millo, a cereal with which preparations such as chichas, arepas and the popular “bollo de millo” are made.
The cultural importance of millet in Juan de Acosta is not limited only to its high nutritional value; With its cane the millo flute is made, also known as the “pito atravesado”, the main instrument of the chorrera cumbia, which takes its name from a township in this municipality.
Thus, from the 60's to the present, the population of Juan de Acosta gathers to celebrate the importance of this cereal, as well as the beauty of the women of the Atlantic coast.
Representatives from several towns in the department attend the pageant with the hope of being crowned Queen of Millo. Likewise, since 2017, the Golden Flute award has been given to the best folklore group.
Gastronomy, dance, music and pageant make up one of the most iconic and colorful festivals in the Atlantic, an unmissable event during the carnival season.
