In 1965, the Libertadores Athletic Race (Carrera Atlética Internacional Los Libertadores) was held for the first time in Duitama, a competition that has established itself as one of the most important athletics events in the country.
After five years, the race became international again in 2024, taking place as is tradition on the May Day holiday with contestants from Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Bolivia, Mexico, Jamaica and Kenya.
With routes of 5 or 10 kilometers that begin and end in the Plaza de los Libertadores, dominated by a statue of Simón Bolívar in the center, races are held in various categories such as sub-18, sub-16, sub-14, sub- 12, Master male and female, physical and cognitive disabilities and seniors, distributing more than 45 million pesos in prizes.
The event attracts a large number of spectators, both local and from other regions of the country, to watch the races, support and encourage the participants.
The "Los Libertadores Athletic Race" is more than a competition; is a celebration of the sporting spirit, history and community of Duitama, establishing itself as an emblematic event in the Colombian sports calendar.
