For more than half a century, during Holy Week, the municipality of Belalcázar becomes the Jerusalem of the first century with Live Holy Week, in which the inhabitants of this Caldense town an hour and a half from Manizales recreate the passion of Christ in its streets.
On Palm Sunday the celebration begins with a procession in which an actor dressed as Jesus walks through the streets of Belalcázar on a donkey while the town's inhabitants welcome him with traditional palms, as described in the gospels.
On Holy Thursday and Good Friday, the corresponding biblical paintings are also recreated with the Last Supper, the prayer in the garden, the sentence of Pilate and the Stations of the Cross.
Likewise, throughout the entire Semana Mayor the corresponding solemn Eucharists are celebrated and religious art exhibitions and film screenings with religious themes are held.
There are also agro-industrial fairs and the traditional Lyric Balconies, with music played live from the balconies of houses.
Holy Week Live in Belalcázar is a beautiful opportunity to connect with the Colombian Catholic tradition in a municipality known for its devotion, which is home to one of the tallest statues of Christ the King in the world, which at 45 meters surpasses even Christ Redeemer of Corcovado.
