In July the municipality of Nuquí, a tourist paradise in Chocó, celebrates its patron saint festivities in honor of the Virgin of Carmen.
The festivities open with the traditional flag parade in which the entire Nuquiseño community participates. During the following week, the neighborhood councils are in charge of organizing the traditional “bundes”, street celebrations in which the inhabitants of each of the neighborhoods parade and dance to the rhythm of drums, trombone and saxophone, wearing colorful costumes that render tribute to the culture and biodiversity of the region.
Each neighborhood is in charge of a day of celebration. In addition, during these days sporting events, traditional games and popular festivals are held that unite the entire community.
The festival reaches its peak on July 16 with the celebration of mass in honor of the Virgen del Carmen, followed by a procession on rafts along the Nuquí River and a grand closing concert with local artists and special guests.
In addition, a gastronomic fair is held where you can enjoy the emblematic preparations and products of the region such as snapper encocado or fish widower.
The Virgen del Carmen Festival in Nuquí is a manifestation of the deep religious and cultural roots of its inhabitants, who, through these celebrations, express their faith, gratitude and sense of community.
