Between the end of January and the beginning of February, the festivities are celebrated in Cartagena de Indias in honor of Our Lady of Candelaria (Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria), patron saint of the city whose festival is commemorated on February 2.
The festivities begin with the traditional night of candles, a night parade with dance and folk music and the participation of different local troupes that celebrate the traditional culture of the region.
The tour ends in the Chambacú sector where it connects with the famous "Frito" Festival, a gastronomic fair characteristic of the Candelaria festivities where you can purchase the most emblematic fried preparations of the Colombian Caribbean coast such as egg arepa, empanadas and the carimañolas
The culminating event of the festivities is the procession that takes place on February 2, in which the image of the Virgin of Candelaria, a figure that dates back to the colonial era, is carried on the shoulders of the parishioners from the Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa to the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. With songs and prayers the faithful thank their patron saint for the favors received.
The Fiestas de la Virgen de la Candelaria (Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria) not only reinforce the religious identity of Cartagena, but also boost tourism, attracting visitors who wish to participate in this centuries-old tradition. It is a celebration that combines faith, culture and community, highlighting the devotion and festive spirit of the people of Cartagena.
