The Cultural Carnival and Popular Pageant of "La Subienda" (Carnaval Cultural y Reinando Popular de La Subienda) is a celebration held in February in Honda since its creation in 1962.
The festival is named after the phenomenon that occurs in the early months of the year, when various fish species travel upriver from the Atlantic coast to spawn—a phenomenon popularly known as “subienda” which fishermen take advantage of to increase their catch.
In this way, the Magdalena River becomes the main attraction of the carnival, serving as the stage for the primary activities, such as the net-casting competition and the agile fisherman challenge.
The fish caught in these events are used for "viudo de pescado" (traditional fish stew) contest, another of the most anticipated events of the carnival. The "Subienda Beauty Pageant" is one of the highlights, where a queen is chosen to represent the beauty, grace, and local culture.
The contestants not only compete for the crown but also demonstrate their knowledge of fishing and the importance of the Magdalena River to the community.
The Carnival and "Subienda" Beauty Pageant (Carnaval Cultural y Reinando Popular de La Subienda) in Honda is not only a festive celebration but also a tribute to the history and riverine lifestyle along the Magdalena River, promoting sustainable tourism and strengthening the cultural pride of the local community.
