In December the municipality of Fortul in Arauca, located about 150 kilometers from the departmental capital, celebrates its traditional Colonies Festival (Festival de Colonias), an event with more than two decades of tradition in which the inhabitants of the town from other regions of the country celebrate their culture. At the same time, the return of family and friends who return to the town to spend the end of year holidays there is celebrated.

During the festival, residents and visitors enjoy live music with national-class guest artists, as well as float parades and troupes.

The colonies also have their space in which each one proudly presents the culture and traditions of their regions of origin, including gastronomic samples in which you can find typical dishes from all over Colombia.

The festival also has typical activities of the eastern Colombian plains such as plain work, horseback riding and bullfighting. The Fortul Colonies Festival (Festival de Colonias) not only strengthens community ties, but also promotes the cultural identity of Fortul and highlights its diverse and inclusive character.
