In June, the city of Ibagué celebrates its traditional Colombian Folkloric Carnival (Festival Folclórico Colombiano), a grand festival with over half a century of tradition that pays homage to the music, cuisine, dance, costumes, and other cultural expressions from all regions of the country.
This event, held as part of the San Juan festivities, has become one of the most important folkloric festivals in the country.
One of the festival’s highlights is the National Folklore Parade, featuring dance troupes from different departments of Colombia.
These groups perform their traditional dances, such as "bambuco", "joropo", "cumbia", and "currulao", dressed in colorful costumes that reflect the cultural identity of each region. Additionally, allegorical floats decorated with folkloric themes parade through the main streets of Ibagué.
The festival also includes the National Folklore Beauty Pageant, with contestants from across the country who, in addition to their beauty, showcase their knowledge of the traditions and folklore of their regions.
There are also musical performances, workshops, craft exhibitions, and food fairs, featuring popular events like "lechona" day and "tamal" tolimense day, which are emblematic parts of the festival.
The Colombian Folkloric Festival not only strengthens cultural identity but also serves as a platform for Colombian folklore to shine nationally and internationally.
