In July in Chaparral, a municipality of Tolima, about 150 kilometers from Ibagué, the Great Equine Festival (Festival Equino de Chaparral) takes place within the framework of the town's fairs and festivals. The festival brings together lovers of horses and equine culture in a celebration of great tradition in the region.
The central event of the festival is the equine judging, an event that has the presence of judges from the Association of Horsemen of Tolima (Asocatol).
The best specimens from local breeders compete in the traditional Paso Fino, Trocha, Trot and Gallop categories. There are also specific events for donkeys and mules and mule driving competitions.
In addition to the competitions, the festival offers complementary activities such as livestock exhibitions, live music and food fairs, where attendees can enjoy typical Tolima food, such as suckling pig and tamale.
The Great Chaparral Equine Festival not only celebrates equine excellence, but also encourages tourism and strengthens the local economy, highlighting the importance of livestock and equine tradition in the region.
