On January 5 and 6, the Carnival of Blacks and Whites (Carnavales de Negros y Blancos) is celebrated in Isnos, a municipality in the south of the department of Huila, a traditional festival of Nariño and several towns in the southwest of the country.
The Isnos carnival has the emblematic elements of this celebration: the main event of the carnival in Isnos begins with the Day of the Blacks, when people paint their faces black with charcoal or paint, in a symbolic act of equality and fraternity .
The next day, White Day, participants cover themselves with talcum powder or flour, thus completing a celebration that unites everyone in the same festive spirit.
As part of the carnival in Isnos, a craft drink competition is held in which chicha is the main protagonist, an event that traditionally takes place on White Day. There is also a carnival for children and troupe competitions in which the creativity of the people of Isenenses is rewarded.
The Black and White Carnival of Isnos (Carnavales de Negros y Blancos) is an event that strengthens the sense of identity and belonging of its inhabitants, and promotes unity in cultural diversity.
