In August, the Piedrecitas village in the municipality of Turbo, Urabá, Antioquia, celebrates its traditional Banana Festival (Festival del Plátano), a festival that pays tribute to this typical product of the region, the basis of the local economy and gastronomy.
The festival includes gastronomic samples with different preparations based on plantains and bananas such as patacones, banana fritters or traditional fried slices.
A banana bunch competition is also held in which local producers showcase the best of their harvests.
One of the main events of the festival is the children's pageant, in which candidates from different towns and villages of Turbo and other municipalities in the region compete for the crown of sovereign of the Banana Festival, parading in costumes alluding to this product.
In addition to this, during the holidays there are sports competitions, banana eating contests, encostalado races and concerts with special guests.
The Banana Festivals (Festival del Plátano) in Piedrecitas not only celebrate an essential crop for the region, but also strengthen the sense of community and promote local culture, attracting visitors and consolidating the identity of the village.
