On August 11, "Antioqueñidad" Day (Día de la Antioqueñidad) is celebrated in Medellín and throughout the department, commemorating the declaration of independence of Antioquia, led by the dictator Juan del Corral, from the Spanish Crown in 1813.
In parks and squares of the city, this festival is celebrated by singing the anthem of Antioquia and singing at the top of our lungs the cry of Oh, freedom! with which the first stanza ends.
Likewise, presentations of the traditional trova paisa are held and food stalls are set up where you can try characteristic products of Antioquian gastronomy such as arepas, chicharrones, chorizos and empanadas.
One of the characteristic events of this day is led by the city's educational institutions that, to instill in the youngest the love for their land, invite primary school children to dress in typical costumes of the department and organize music and dance that pay tribute to the culture of the region.
"Antioqueñidad" Day (Día de la Antioqueñidad) is an opportunity for the inhabitants of Medellín and its surroundings to connect with their roots, celebrate their cultural heritage and strengthen their sense of belonging.
